Otokylä Properties Becoming Smoke-Free Areas from 1 October 2026
The Finnish Act on Residential Leases will change on 1 October 2026. Under the new legislation, smoking will no longer be permitted in rental apartments, on balconies, or in apartment-specific outdoor areas. These changes also apply to existing tenancy agreements.
In response to these legislative changes and to promote a healthier, safer, and more comfortable living environment for all residents, Otokylä ry has decided to designate all of its properties as smoke-free areas.
What does this mean in practice?
As of 1 October 2026:
- Smoking is prohibited inside apartments.
- Smoking is prohibited on balconies and apartment-specific outdoor areas.
- Smoking is prohibited in all shared indoor and outdoor areas.
- Smoking is only permitted outside the property boundaries.
The smoke-free policy applies to all residents and visitors.
New smoke-free area signs will be installed throughout our properties at a later date to remind residents and visitors of the new rules. Please note that the smoke-free policy will take effect on 1 October 2026 and remains in force regardless of whether signage has been installed.
