What is Otokylä ry?

Otokylä ry is an association based in Oulu that rents apartments to students. It is known for its affordable rents, excellent locations close to campuses and services, and its warm, student-friendly community atmosphere.

Today, Otokylä offers around 600 residential places that are situated in the neighborhoods of Höyhtyä, Kontinkangas, Kaukovainio, and Intiö, all within close proximity to OSAO units, Oulu University of Applied Sciences, and the University of Oulu campuses. Each location provides convenient bus connections, making it easy for students to commute to the Linnanmaa campus as well.

  • Monday: 9 AM to 5 PM
  • Tuesday – Thursday: 9 AM to 4 PM
  • Friday: 9 AM to 2 PM

The office is located in a low building between the A- and B-buildings at the street level. The address is Otokuja 2, with the entrance to the office being on the B-building side.

History of Otokylä ry

The housing committee was established in 1966 with the support of the staff of the Oulu Technical Institute, and later that year, the founding meeting of the Oulu Technical Institute Student Housing Support Association was held.

At the end of July 1970, the first apartment building (A-building in Höyhtyä), containing 72 two-person rooms, was completed, and the first residents moved in a couple of weeks later. B-building was completed in 1971, followed by C- and D-buildings in 1973.

Major developments:

  • 1966 – Association founded as Oulun teknillisen oppilaitoksen Oppilasasuntolan Tuki ry (renamed Otokylä ry in 2000).
  • 1970–1973 – First buildings (A, B, C, D) completed in Höyhtyä at Otokuja 2.
  • 1987–1995 – Major renovations for A, B, C, and D buildings, including heating and window upgrades.
  • 2005 – Viestikatu 10 (Intiö) completed, adding 73 apartments under Otokylä ry’s management.
  • 2006 – Major renovations at Kiviharjuntie 10 (Kontinkangas) for all four buildings (A–D), adding 136 apartments.
  • 2008 – Kultatie 3 (Kaukovainio) completed, adding eight apartment buildings with external-access balconies (144 apartments in total).
  • 2010 – Balcony repairs
  • 2013 – Replacement of windows and locking systems
  • 2014 – Replacement of exterior doors
  • 2025 – Upgrade of the camera surveillance system at the Otokuja 2 buildings.
